The Time to Give is Now!

~~This is the time of year when we all become aware of how important it is to Give to Others. We hear it in the commercial breaks from the shows that we watch every day. We hear it at work when we are encouraged to fill out a contribution notice for the United Way. We see the Salvation Army "Bell Ringers" on street corners and at entrances to stores as we are busily passing by looking for the perfect gift for a loved one. Unfortunately, we all too often do just that, we just "pass by", or forget all about that giving spirit throughout the rest of the year.

I would just like to take a moment to share a little story with you and hopefully help to create a concept that will stick with you. My reasons are somewhat selfish. You see I understand the physiologic, hormonal, and chemical changes that occur in your body when you help others. There is a multitude of research studies on the subject, and this research is ongoing as we speak. You see my job is to aid you in promoting and supporting your Health and Wellness. Therefore I have to reveal to you that indeed my intentions will ultimately support my mission in life. That being; "To aid you in creating a genetically congruent lifestyle, and by doing so divert your life path from the disease and sickness paradigm to the Health and Wellness Paradigm."

Now that we have full disclosure I can get on with my story.  This story begins with a rich man asking a friend, "Why am I criticized for being miserly? Everyone knows I will leave everything to charity when I die."

"Well," said the friend, "let me tell you about the pig and the cow. The pig was lamenting to the cow one day about how unpopular he was."

"People are always talking about your gentleness and your kind eyes", said the pig. "Sure you give milk and cream, but I give more. I give bacon, ham and bristles. They even pickle my feet. Still nobody likes me. Why is this?"

The cow thought a minute, then replied, "Well, maybe it's because I give while I'm still living."

You see the point of that story and our life's story is to give while we are here. It may be a smile or a kind word to someone who hasn't had a kind word spoken to them in a day, a week, a year, or a lifetime. You just don't know. It might be sharing a thought, or a congratulations on a job well done. I could be giving something away that you truly cherish to someone who has none, remembering the cliché which is also very true, that "You can't take it with you."

I read something this morning that applies to this "Think Right" article, which can be proven as I have already stated through numerous valid scientific research studies. That being that, "it is impossible to give of yourself without receiving something immediately." Now I want you all to understand right now that I am certainly not suggesting that the purpose of giving is to see what you can get out of it. What I can tell you is that there is a physiological change that occurs in our "brain chemistry". This change occurs both hormonally, and neurologically. The result is an altered state which is beneficial and uplifting to you as a result of your helping another. That sense of "happiness" and "euphoria" that comes over you when you give is not just coincidence, oh no, on the contrary it is a pre-programmed physiological change. This change absolutely, and unequivocally will contribute to a "Longer Healthier Life".

So please, if you take nothing else away from this "Think Right" installment, remember to give freely, give often, and give to others year round.
