Why Am I KetoCrazed? Part 5

~~
Those of you who have been either a patient of mine for years, or have read my articles, or attended one of my seminars, are aware that I witnessed a ten year decline in my father's cognitive abilities as he slowly and progressively fell further and further down the worm hole of what we so commonly and in such a cavalier fashion refer to as "Alzheimer's". The same process took my grandfather's life as well. Those of us who have helplessly watched this process felt the deep frustration and helplessness worsen as this unstoppable insidious decline of cumulative neurologic degeneration robbed our loved one of their memories, personality, and ultimately life.

This is the plight that another researched that I was honored to listen to had experienced as well. Dr. Mary Newport was a practicing neonatologist in Florida. She was the founding Medical Director of two newborn intensive care units in Tampa. She also authored two books titled "Alzheimer's What If There Was a Cure? The Story of Ketones", and, "The Coconut Oil and Low Cab Solution for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other Diseases."

At age 50, Mary's husband Steve Newport began exhibiting the signs and symptoms of early onset dementia. As his symptoms progressed over the next 5 years his loving wife began searching for the cause and an answer. She came to ultimately find it in coconut oil, and restricting Steve's grain and fruit based carbohydrate intake.

So, why did this work for Steve? Let's look at what the research is showing us. In 2000 Dr. Richard L. Veech at the National Institutes of Health found that nerves, or neurons taken from brains of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's patients, survive in cell cultures when ketones known as BHB were added to the culture. It was also found that glucose/sugar uptake is 17% lower overall in the grey matter of the brains of Alzheimer's patients, and 25% lower in the specific areas of the brain affected by Alzheimer's. Ketone uptake however was found to be normal in these individuals. This indicates that the brains of Alzheimer's patients can fire on ketones very efficiently, but not so with glucose.

Interestingly, as Dr. Newport pointed out, MCT's [one form of ketones] are found in breast milk. So, we actually begin using ketones as fuel from birth.

Dr. Newport noted that in 2004 a pilot study was done with 20 mild to moderate dementia patients, on the use of "exogenous ketones" [ketones taken in as food] in a single dose. The study indicated that there was improvement. A follow up study was performed with 152 test subjects for 90 days, and half of them improved. The individuals in the study who did not carry the Alzheimer's gene improved more than those who carried the gene. Since this study, the substance containing the ketones simply called AC-1202, has been approved by the FDA as a food grade product.

The NIH has also found that "ketone esters" reduce neural "plaques", and "tangles" in the brain.

Dr. Newport went on to state that the MCT's in coconut oil which generated ketones in the body, have been demonstrated to help with not only Alzheimer's, but also other forms of dementia, Parkinson's, ALS [Lou Gehrig's Disease], and Multiple Sclerosis.

So, the evidence, and research is out, and irrefutable, KETONES, AND THE KETOGENIC LIFESTLE WORKS! If you are not convinced this is the lifestyle to seek, let's look at two more things that Dr. Newport mentioned as she closed her lecture. Ketones aid in reducing blood pressure, and they improve kidney function.
