Don't Postpone Being Alive

~~As many of you know, one of the components in the "Four Pillars of Health" that I teach here at the Center, and lecture about regularly is the "Think Right" component. This often overlooked, but critically important component of the Health and Wellness Paradigm is one which imparts often subtle, but progressively worsening physiological changes on the ecosystem of cells we simply refer to as "our body". The main form that this assault on our "Think Right" takes environmentally is chronic stress. This chronic stress component is manifested in our physiology as such things as elevated blood pressure, increased blood cholesterol levels, increased blood sugar levels, and reduced libido to mention just a few of the many negative health related changes that it causes.

In my book, Dr. Pfeiffer's Guide a Longer Healthier Life, reserve a copy here, I discuss the stress response in much more detail. For right now I would like summarize my thoughts with a quote from Thich Nhat Hanh titled "Destiny". As you read this piece, please let each word wash over your mind and rest for a moment so that you may really internalize the meaning of the author. Please do not just consider this a Pollyanna statement and then merely move on to all of the other seemingly important things in your life.

Destiny
"We tend to be alive in the future, not now. We say, "Wait until I finish school and get my Ph.D degree, and then I will be really alive."

When we have it, and it's not easy to get, we say to ourselves, "I have to wait until I have a job in order to be really alive." And then after the job, a car. After the car, a house. We are not capable of being alive in the present moment.

We tend to postpone being alive to the future, the distant future, we don't know when.

Now is the moment to be alive. We may never be alive at all in our entire life."

This statement causes us to stop and give some serious thought as to what we believe is important in life. By doing so we create a sense of priority about the things in life that may currently be all thrown together in one large pile of seemingly important "stuff". Step back and look at that pile and see if you don't agree with me that by creating order and priority out of the pile of "stuff" that you wouldn't be able to reduce your overall chronic stress level. I can assure you that by doing this you will definitely improve your overall Health and Wellness, and balance the criteria that I mentioned earlier like blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
